The Sport

Dragon boats are approximately 40-feet in length. A colorful dragon head sits at the front of the boat and a dragon tail decorates the back. Twenty paddlers, with free standing paddles, sit two abreast. The pace setting drummer is in the first seat of the boat and the steersperson is at the rear. The key to successful dragon boating is paddlers working in unison, with all paddles hitting the water at the same time. The motion of the paddles propels the boat forward.

Dragon boating requires a large group of people to work together. This social sport develops strength and endurance as well as friendships.Interest in dragon boating is growing. There are over 50 million people that take part in dragon boat races worldwide. Today you can find dragon boat teams in every major Canadian city and in many cities in the United States as well.
